5 k-dramas for beginners.

'K-dramas', what a magical, beautiful, sweet little word that is. A word that has recently taken the world by storm, gaining popularity and love from all over the globe.

The world of k-dramas is  wonderful and quite honestly an irresistible  place to be. The storyline, acting, music, fashion and aesthetics, everything is so spot on that one can not help but get addicted to them. The hallyu wave is in its full swing currently  and if you happen to be someone interested in jumping in, then now is the perfect time.

If you are a beginner who's looking for some recommendations for  k-dramas to watch then you have come to the right place. Look no further, ask and it shall be delivered people. Here are my recommendations of the best 5 k-dramas for beginners :-

1) The Master's Sun

Genre: Supernatural Rom-Com

My very first k-drama,(has it been a year already, what!) and honestly I couldn't have picked a better one to start on my k-drama journey. From the very first episode, the drama had me hooked, converting a cynical like me into a k-drama fan. So how could I not pick this as my very first recommendation for you all.

The drama, starring Gong Hyo Jin as Tae Gong Shil and So Ji Sub as Jo Joong Won will surely grip your attention and will have you hooked from the very get-go.

The story revolves mainly around the female lead Gong Shil who has the ability to see ghosts and is tormented by their constant appearances and unfulfilled wishes.Joong Won, the male lead is a rich, stingy CEO who is a cynic in his own right. The poor girl-rich guy trope may feel like a cliché but trust me not much else about this drama is clichéd.

The drama not only focuses on the leads but each episode brings with it a sub-story which will not only pique your interest, but will also make you cry at times. The introduction of different new mini-plots does make this one a fun watch and you wouldn't find too many dull moments or clichéd, repetitive scenes even though the series in itself stands a bit on the lengthier side with 24 number of episodes.

My rating: 8.5/10

Positives: A must-watch drama which doesn't feel cliché in most accounts. An interesting, unique storyline.

Negatives: The male lead being a bit too rude at times, last few episodes felt a little dragged.

2) Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo

Genre: Sports, Rom-Com.

Where do I even start with this one. I can in all honesty heap praises for this one all day. If there was a drama that broke all the clichéd stereotypes of  how a  main lead should be in a rom-com, this one was it.

The show starring Lee Sung Kyung as a weightlifting champion Kim Bok Joo and Nam Joo Hyuk as a swimmer Joo Jung Hyung is a love-story of two school athletes and childhood friends. The drama focuses on their school life, internal struggles and ends up giving us one of the cutest pairings of the k-drama world.

The secondary characters of the drama are like cherry on top of the cake, bringing so much to the show with their own charming personalities and witty dialogues. Each character is just incredibly memorable and  so fun to watch.

Which seems to be a quite simple storyline has been elevated by the real-like friendship and warmth that colours this show till the very end, making it one of the most uplifiting, moodmaker of a gem that one absolutely must give a try to.

My Rating: 10/10❤

Positives: Great stereotypes shattering main leads, Amazing secondary characters, Warm, happy and light watch.

Negatives: The withdrawl after finishing this one.

3) Flower of Evil

Genre- Suspense, Thriller, Melodrama

This drama sees Lee Joon-gi playing the role of Baek Hee-sung, a seemingly perfect husband and father, and the beautiful Moon Chae-won plays the role of his kick-ass detective wife Cha Ji-won. The two along with their adorable daughter make what seeems like a picture-perfect family. But, is all that meets the eye really all there is?

When Ji won and her colleagues start investigating a series of mysterious murders, it very soon becomes quite clear to her that her husband may be hiding some mysteries of his own.

The plot of this series is so gripping that it's hard not to watch it once you get started, just get through the first two episodes and you'll not want to stop, trust me. The actors have done a spectacular job of bringing the well-written characters into life and the mystery of the real villain really gets you curious, leaving you wanting to know more after each episode.

My rating: 9.5/10.

Positives: Great storyline coupled with some really good work by all the actors involved. Special mention to the adorable Jung Seo Yeon who plays Baek Eun Ha in the show.❤

Negatives: The last episode felt a bit lackluster for a show this good. The female lead's acting was a bit loud for my prefernce, especially in the beginning.

4) Fight for my way

Genre- Sports, Slice of life, Romance

To make a list of my k-drama recommendations without a Park-Seo Joon starrer will not be possible, he is my absolute favourite and for good reasons too. This man does not disappoint when it comes to his choice of work, picking up shows with engaging storylines and playing different, unique characters, doing justice to every single one of them.

A show revolving around the lives of four friends, 'Fight for my way' shows how real-life struggles affect their dreams, forcing them to settle for their mundane reality rather than the thrill of going after their passions. How these four friends fight against all odds, both in personal and professional life, and how it affects their relationship with each other is what makes the core of this series.

The never give up attitude of the leads and the heartwarming friendship of the four leads really make this one a beautiful, warm must-watch that one simply can not miss out on.

*Spoiler spoiler- Prepare yourself for some really iconic aegyo scenes*

My Rating: 10/10

Positives: The acting, the storyline, the dialogues, the chemistry of both of the couples.❤ Also the main male lead's entrance music in each fight... that are some legends in action right there.( You'll know when you'll see the show😉)

Negatives: Can get a bit boring for people who absolutely do not like sports of any kind, there are quite a few sports related scenes in the show, I mean obviously, no shocker there.

5) Sweet Home

Genre- Action, Thriller, Horror

And rounding up my list of 5 k-drama for beginners is none other than Sweet Home, a show not for the faint of heart, you have been warned.

The show starring Song Kang as Cha Hyun Soo starts on a rather eerie note as he moves into a new apartment after losing his entire family. From the very onset of the show, you can sense something "fishy" in the air.

Hyun Soo's life and the life of everyone around him changes as people start getting infected by a mysterious virus that starts turning people into monsters. As they are faced with the unforeseen and fatal challenge, it is the battle for survival.

This is one of those shows that makes you worried and gets you on the edge of your seat every episode. A must-watch that will tingle the senses for thrill seeking audiences.

My Rating: 9.75/10

Positives: Thrilling storyline, well-written characters, great heart-thumping music, great graphics.

Negatives: A cliffhanger ending and season 2 has not even be announced yet. *sobs*
